Volunteer opportunity description

Are you outgoing, friendly and interested in meeting and mentoring people from different cultures? The Communication Exchange Program provides the opportunity to connect professionals with graduate international business students to help them practice their informal listening and speaking skills and provide them with an opportunity to connect with New York City and American culture.

CXP is ideal for people who are open-minded, non-judgmental, accepting of cultural differences, interested in education and how it applies to people’s lives, and excited to learn from others.

What is the Communication Exchange Program?

The Communication Exchange Program is a program that provides a full-circle immersion in language, communication and culture through the lens of real people by matching volunteers with international graduate students of The Gabelli School of Business at Fordham University. Volunteers from the program meet virtually or in person with their respective communication partners every week to help them practice their informal listening and speaking skills. Volunteers also provide information to students about adapting to life and work in New York and the U.S. in a friendly and casual setting.

Who can participate in the Communication Exchange Program?

CXP is open to native English speaking professionals who possess a strong command of written and spoken English. Volunteers should be friendly, open to meeting new people, and respectful of differences in culture and communication styles. Volunteers should also be able to work independently, manage their time, and coordinate their own meeting schedules.

How does the program work?

Each volunteer must commit to meeting with their communication exchange partner for 1 hour per week either remotely or in person depending on their location for the duration of the academic semester (October 1- December 15.) Volunteers should also be 25 years old or older.

To participate, you must:

  • volunteer for a minimum of 1 hour per week for one semester
  • be fluent in both written and spoken English.
