Volunteer opportunity description
Language Assistance Program Outreach Volunteer (3 hours a week):
The Poll Site Language Assistance Program provides interpretation services at select poll sites in the following languages: Arabic, Bengali, Chinese, Haitian-Creole, Italian, Korean, Polish, Russian, Urdu, and Yiddish. Access to interpretation is a right guaranteed under the Voting Rights Act that is underutilized by New Yorkers who speak a language other than English. Poll Site Language Assistance Program Volunteers play an important in bringing awareness to this important service. Volunteers conduct community outreach in the form of phone banking, increase accessibility of digital flyers and content, and support the NYCCEC text-info line.
Additional volunteer opportunities may include participating in virtual days of action prior to election cycles, which include active phone banking and targeted community canvassing to inform New Yorkers of multilingual resources that are available.
Requirements
Volunteers must be 18 years of age to participate, are committed to bringing awareness of voting rights and access to interpretaion and language access services, and are culturally responsive to the needs of the communities served. Proficiency in the Language Assistance Program languages is prefereed, but not necessary.
