Volunteer opportunity description

One in six New York City residents - over 1.4 million - is food insecure.

Hour Children’s Food Pantry and Community Outreach is seeking volunteers to support efforts including: providing food, case management services, nutrition education, and assistance with food stamps to Hour Children families and local community residents.

Located between the Queensbridge Houses and Ravenswood Houses, the Hour Children Food Pantry serves as many as 150 participants per day. This specific area in Queens qualifies as a food desert. While women and children in the Hour Children program use the Food Pantry, it is open to all New York City residents in need of food. Operating in a client choice model, participants get to choose what type of food they want, ultimately cutting down on wasteage.

Volunteers in the Food Pantry help set up before distribution hours. They can also help during distribution, by handing out foods. Some volunteers also organize food drives. Other help during community outreach events, like food workshops and filling out SNAP applications.

We are looking for thoughtful, socially-conscious volunteers to help out in the Food Pantry. To apply, please fill out our volunteer application below or e-mail Abigael Burke at aburke@hourchildren.org
