Volunteer opportunity description

Organization Profile:

Free Arts NYC programs inspire children to re-imagine their worlds and transform their lives throughout the creative arts. With the help of dedicated and caring volunteer mentors, Free Arts NYC delivers creative arts programs directly to low income, homeless, abused and neglected children.

We partner with group homes, shelters, schools and community centers to give children the opportunity to express themselves in a supportive environment in order to develop communication and trust. Our programs and the relationships they foster help children and families experience new levels of hope and creativity.

Free Arts NYC provides under-served youth and families with a unique combination of educational arts and mentoring programs that help them to foster the self-confidence and resiliency needed to realize their fullest potential. Free Arts NYC’s Teen Arts Program (TAP) provides teens with regular opportunities to access NYC cultural institutions and explore the arts as a potential academic or professional goal.

What is TAP - Museum and Studio Visit Program? Volunteer Mentors in TAP’s Museum & Studio Visit Program are paired 1-on-1 with a teen (8th-12th grader) and accompany their mentee’s on monthly visits to diverse arts institutions and artist studios. Mentor pairs will attend eight group visits to various cultural institutions (visits include a guided tour, creative workshop, and lunch) organized by Free Arts. In between these visits, the mentor will organize individual monthly visits with their mentee tailored to the teen’s interests, including an interactive art activity led by the mentor.
