Volunteer opportunity description
Citizen Schools is a national non-profit organization that partners with low-income public middle schools to expand the learning day. During the three additional hours of learning time provided to each student every day, students receive more targeted time on task, engage in enriched academic support and participate in apprenticeships--project-based, volunteer-led classes. By bringing volunteers into the classroom, students are able to learn concrete skills from authentic professionals, helping them make the connection between what they are learning in school and a potential future career.
Apprenticeships take place once a week, for 90 minutes a week, over the course of 10 weeks. Apprenticeships are bookended by two trainings for volunteers, as well as a WOW! event--the final product, performance or presentation where students teach back what they learned from volunteers over the course of the semester. Each volunteer is supported by a Citizen Schools co-teacher who is the point person for lesson planning and behavior management within the classroom.
