Volunteer opportunity description

Harlem RBI, an award winning youth development program, is seeking volunteer tutors to provide subject-specific academic support to our middle school students in East Harlem and the South Bronx. Tutors work with small groups in academic tutoring sessions. Tutors meet with youth for weekly sessions that can improve student success in class, increase subject-specific retention, and contribute to overall academic development. The ideal candidate is passionate about youth development, has a strong command of the academic subject to be tutored and has prior tutoring and/or teaching experience.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Lead weekly group tutoring sessions;
  • Support participants with homework completion in a variety of middle school subjects, including: English, Math, Science, and Social Studies;
  • Serve as a positive role model;
  • Celebrate success and progress of youth.



  • Passionate about youth development;
  • Possess creativity, enthusiasm and patience;
  • Have the ability and desire to engage youth and families in a low-income, urban community;
  • Solid oral communication skills;
  • Strong command of the academic subject to be covered during sessions;
  • Previous experience working with youth;
  • 1-2 years teaching experience (a plus);
  • Bachelor’s Degree.

Hours: At least one 2 hour session per week, Monday-Thursday. Times vary between 3:30pm and 6:30pm, based on youth/volunteer availability and program schedule. We require at least a three-month commitment.
