Volunteer opportunity description

Event Overview

Actively involved fathers are a positive force in the lives of their children and their community. Dads Take your Children to School is an event that promotes increased involvement by fathers, stepfathers, foster fathers, grandfathers, uncles, brothers, godfather, and other significant male or "father-like" caregivers in their children’s education. On September 20 th P.S. 73 will host a culminating event in which all schools located in the Highbridge Community of the Bronx will come together to celebrate the success of their own individual events as well as provide exciting and engaging activities for fathers and their children to enjoy together.

Volunteer Role

Since P.S. 73 will be hosting this event for hundreds of families throughout the Highbridge Community, the school administration is hoping to attract volunteers from a wide-range of CBOs, corporations, non-profit organizations, community groups, local businesses, and individuals to come and lead fitness activities or interactive and engaging workshops with parents and children around the theme of "Life Skills." Some topics for workshops are, but not limited to:

  • Financial literacy
  • Resume writing
  • Job interview tips
  • Dressing for Success
  • Reproductive Health and Relationships
  • Making healthy choices (nutrition and fitness for men and boys, in particular)
  • Preparing for middle school and high school (what parents should know and look for when choosing schools)
  • College and Beyond (higher education and career choices)
  • Literacy and homework help
  • Computer literacy (especially navigating Microsoft Office applications)
  • Bullying and Cyberbullying
  • Fitness gurus: anybody who can lead yoga, Zumba, aerobics, meditation or relaxation therapy techniques, etc.
  • Any additional topic that may be of interest to fathers and their children!

If you cannot volunteer, the school would greatly appreciate any donation of materials for the event (food, decorations, etc.) or donations of school supplies, sports equipment, or resources/activities that families can enjoy and utilize together (i.e. museum or symphony tickets, books, educational toys, etc.)

Requirements
