Description & History

Founded in 1963, BCAFS was the first program serving pregnant teenagers (Project Teen Aid Family Services), helping them graduate from high school almost 50 years ago.

Presently the agency offers Early Head Start, Head Start, Universal Pre K, Home Based Services, Parenting Classes, Homeless Shelter and Affordable Housing, to educate and invest in community development in Brooklyn.

social and comprehensive supportive services in the 11201 & 11205 areas i.e. Bedford Stuyvesant, Fort-Greene, Flatbush, Bushwick, Brooklyn Heights, Williamsburg and surrounding Brooklyn neighborhoods for over forty years.

Famous as the first program to serve pregnant teenagers and helping them graduate from high school almost a half century ago, later programs throughout all of New York were then modeled after our "Project Teen Aid Family Services".

We serve a predominantly low-income population and strive to provide community residents with the support and tools they need to overcome difficult circumstances and build independent lives and futures.

BCAFS offer programs in early care and childhood development and education from birth to age 5, youth development, adult literacy, homelessness prevention, domestic violence, job and computer training and family support services to over 800 families annually.

Our staff, many of whom are from the community we serve, are comprised of over 75 dedicated individuals who partner closely with families and neighborhood services to provide a holistic, comprehensive model of service delivery. We also rely on our strong corps of volunteers including parents, participants and community leaders. Our unique model draws on the strengths, expertise and resources of the surrounding neighborhood we serve.

Brooklyn Child and Family Services is organized around four separate centers:
* Transitional Housing
* Affordable Housing
* Child Development and Education
* Youth Development

The three centers are operational and provide services during the entire calendar year of 2009-2010 (the homeless shelter is indeed a 24-7 yearlong operation).
