Description & History

Calpulli Mexican Dance Company is first a professional touring company that develops and maintains a vibrant, emotive repertoire of dance with live music celebrating the Mexican and Mexican-American community and its cutlture. The company tours domestically continuously with most performances in the northeastern USA. Calpulli made its international debut in 2013 when it performed in the Kingdom of Bahrain. In its home in New York City, the company performs with up to 25 dancers and 12 musicians, while tours are typically with 12 dancers and 6 musicians. The company is led by Artistic Director Alberto Lopez with the support of Music Director George Saenz, Dance Captain Grisel Pren, and Managing Director Juan Castano.

Arts-in-Education programming brings Calpulli Mexican Dance Company's expertise in dance, music, and artistry to schools and educators to compliment curriculum with engaging, dynamic, and interactive experiences. The organization leads dance residencies, workshops, and custom programming (co-developed with hosts)  to partner with numerous schools, libraries and community organizations to bring the enriching programs to their communities.


Calpulli Community (Comunidad Calpulli) is a program of Calpulli Mexican Dance Company that brings its award-winning educational services to targetted immigrant community throughout the northeastern USA. The program consists of dance and music classes for ages 5 and up and are based entirely on voluntary donations for youth, with the goal of eliminating all financial barriers to access. Calpulli Community is currently holding classes in Staten Island, Queens ( two locations), New Rochelle, and Red Bank, NJ.  

Lastly, Calpulli manages open rehearsals are offered to adult audiences who seek to explore the company's work and obtain training in its dance form.
