Description & History

Overcoming-Love Ministries (OCLM), located at 78-14 Rockaway Boulevard; Woodhaven, NY 11421, is a 501(c)(3), faith-based, not-for-profit organization. Our organizational mission is to provide services, programs, and support that will meet the mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual needs of anyone in need of or desiring assistance. Our organization believes that a holistic approach to man’s needs creates a more stable human being and thus the ability to function at a higher level. In 2005, OCLM began serving meals to the Brooklyn and Queens community twice per week from its church location at 78-14 Rockaway Boulevard; Woodhaven, NY 11421 and from its primary shelter location at 246 Jamaica Avenue; Brooklyn, NY 11207. Due to an increasing need for hunger relief and social services for community residents, OCLM acquired an additional location with food preparation equipment and adequate space for services. The additional site, located at 275 Liberty Avenue; Brooklyn, NY 11207, is known as Liberty Café and is a restaurant/soup kitchen serving hot lunches to the East New York Industrial Park community and its surrounding areas. The Café, which opened in December 2009, is currently serving nearly 400 meals per day. Liberty Café serves nutritionally balanced lunches free-of-charge Monday through Friday from 10:30 AM to 1:30 PM to anyone seeking a warm meal. Its mission is to provide ‘holistic nourishment’ to anyone who desires it, regardless of age, race, gender/sexual orientation, financial/living situation, background, religion, immigration status, or health/physical condition. The term ‘holistic nourishment’ is defined by our organization as the provision of goods or services which improve the health and overall well-being of the recipients, meeting their physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual needs. Its goal is to serve these individuals and assist them in becoming fully self-sufficient, contributory members of society. Liberty Café serves a dual purpose: to ensure that the members of the Brooklyn community have adequate access to healthy meals in order to combat the obesity epidemic and other health problems resulting from the consumption of unhealthy food and also to provide programs, services, and referrals which will assist, support, and guide its visitors on their path toward self-sufficiency and self-actualization. The Café, situated close to multiple shelters, schools, nursing homes, and outreach programs, features soothing colors and innovative décor, and state-of-the-art food preparation equipment. In addition to providing healthy meals to the members of the surrounding communities in a relaxing, inspirational setting, the Café, in the near future, will have social service offices to assist individuals with on-site, one-to-one consultations, referrals, and information on several services, including nutrition education, child care, food stamp and health insurance enrollment, healthcare and legal services, substance abuse programs, counseling, resume preparation and interviewing techniques, job opportunities, and training/education among others. The Café hopes to soon have additional volunteers for general food preparation, serving, and clean-up, as well as the services of pro-bono professionals on-site on varying days of the week, such as lawyers to give legal advice, registered nurses to take blood pressure and give health advice, nutritionists to teach visitors healthy eating habits, and chaplains to offer guidance and counseling if needed, also free-of-charge. We also hope to soon have an individual available to inform visitors of their possible eligibility for benefits, such as food stamps and WIC and to will assist them with the application process.
