Description & History

Students for Service provides a multi-layered, integrated approach to service and service learning. By joining with SFS, students are able to immerse themselves in the causes about which they are passionate, meet like-minded teens from across the city, and work alongside professionals from NYC’s leading service organizations. SFS partners with our city’s non-profits to develop service programs addressing hunger, poverty, and the environment, and the improvement of the lives of adults and academically “at risk” kids, through a series of interconnected projects that take place throughout the year.

All of our programs include a service learning component, led by young adult mentors with a history of and commitment to service, which enhances the students’ hands-on experience and promotes a deeper, contextual understanding of the problems they are working to solve. As they work together, our volunteers also about one other and how citizens from extremely varied backgrounds can join together to effect positive change.
