Description & History

The NYC Medical Reserve Corps is a group of highly skilled health care professionals who respond to disasters, emergencies and public health events.

The Medical Reserve Corps came into being as a direct result of 9/11 when NYC had no way to use health care volunteers. Part of a national Medical Reserve Corps organization, NYC MRC has more than 8.300 health care volunteer members. Our members include doctors, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, dentists, mental health professionals, respiratory therapists, veterinarians, and many other health professions.

NYC MRC is part of the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. within the Office of Emergency Preparedness and Response.  Although originally seen as a disaster response group, NYC MRC has expanded its mission to include strengthening public health by providing ongoing health care service and education to underserved communities.

NYC MRC has served during H1N1, Hurricane Irene, Hurricane Sandy, Hepatitis A outbreaks, Ebola response. Our veterinarians have also participated in pet rabies vaccination clinics, and our members have helped with Tick surveillence.

NYC MRC provides over 30 trainings a year, free of charge to our members. We also participate in disaster exercises with hospitals and with the FDNY.

NYC MRC is commited to improving health outcomes by providing public health services to underserved communities. We provide blood pressure screenings and education, and flu vaccinations, and are investigating other ways to serve the public.

All NYC MRC activities are voluntary. There are no mandatory trainings, although MRC Orientation and ICS 100 and 800 are strongly recommended.

NYC MRC is a good faith agreement. This means that members are asked to serve after they have satisfied their obligations to their families and their jobs. NYC MRC provides indemnification against malpractice to its members when they serve, and some limited workers compensation coverage.

We welcome health care professionals to become a member of this important organization.
