Description & History

In November 2018, New York City voters approved three ballot initiatives proposed by the 2018 Charter Revision Commission. This established the NYC Civic Engagement Commission (CEC) making it the first democratically elected commission responsible for promoting inclusive civic participation for all New Yorkers.

Our mission at New York City’s Civic Engagement Commission is to increase civic participation, promote civic trust, and strengthen democracy in New York City.

To support and encourage New Yorkers to meaningfully participate in civic life, the CEC believes that active listening, as a process and practice, is central to building relationships and trust. We are committed to being practitioners of participatory democracy and affirm our responsibility and commitment to lift the power and voices of all NYC communities.
