Description & History

Founded in 1985 by internationally renowned Japanese-American sculptor Isamu Noguchi, The Noguchi Museum is the first museum in America to be established by a living artist for the display of his or her own work.

To create the Museum, Noguchi purchased a factory building in 1974 that was located across the street from his Long Island City studio where he had worked and lived since the early 1960s.

Noguchi designed and curated the Museum and its encircling garden, creating one of the most intimate yet dramatic installations of art in New York City.
