Description & History

Billion Oyster Project (BOP) is an ecosystem restoration and education project aimed at

restoring one billion live oysters to New York Harbor and engaging hundreds of thousands of

youth through restoration-based STEM education programs. BOP has collaborated with over 100

schools to provide authentic, place-based science and math lessons through the lens of oyster

restoration.

Students at the New York Harbor School have been working on oyster restoration in New York

Harbor for the past six years, learning to scuba dive, culture oyster larvae, operate and maintain vessels,

design and build underwater equipment, and conduct long-term ecosystem monitoring - all in the

murky, contaminated, fast moving waters of one of the busiest ports in the country. Over the first

few years of the program, over twenty five million oysters have been deployed throughout the

Harbor.
