About the NYCHA Health Corps

NYCHA Health Corps is a new and exciting Public Health AmeriCorps program administered by NYC Service in close partnership with the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA), in which NYCHA residents are recruited to serve full time at community-based nonprofits and public agencies for 9 months.

NYCHA Health Corps will provide an opportunity for NYCHA residents to receive training and work experience in areas that promote health and wellness. Each NYCHA Health Corps member’s roles serves to support health and community partners in expanding their focus in interventions that advances equitable health outcomes across public housing developments. By leveraging the national AmeriCorps model centered on leadership development and public service, members add value to organization priorities, goals, and initiatives, and support in delivering vital resources or programming to more NYCHA residents.

Program Objectives

  1. Support health and community partners in expanding their focus in interventions that advances equitable health outcomes across public housing developments.
  2. Create pathways for NYCHA residents into public health related careers.

NYCHA Health Corps Application Process Overview

Step 1:  Complete the NYCHA Health Corps Pre-Screen HERE 

Step 2: Submit an application

  • When you request an application, you will receive a link that will allow you to save your progress and return to your application at a later date.
  • In the application you will be able to indicate up to 3 of your top choices from the positions listed below.

Note: Applications are accepted on a rolling basis during the application period

Step 3:  Applicant Host Site Phone/Virtual Interview

  • After you have completed the pre-screen form and applied, you will be notified within 2-3 weeks whether you have been selected to move forward with an interview at a host site.
  • If you have been selected to interview, the host site will reach out to coordinate the interview with you. Interviews will be conducted by either phone call or video chat. Not in person. This is the time to ask detailed questions regarding onsite tasks and schedules.
  • You may be selected to interview for up to 3 positions based on the preferences indicated in your application.

Step 4: Applicant Offers

  • If the supervisor you interviewed with would like to offer you the position, you will be notified within 2-3 weeks from your interview. An NYC Service staff member will extend the offer to you and you will have 2 business days to either accept or decline.
  • If you do not accept or decline the offer within 2 business days, the offer will be sent to another candidate.  

Step 5: Candidate Onboarding

  • Once an applicant has accepted the position, NYC Service will begin the onboarding process that entails the agreeing and undergoing of the Criminal Background Check, in addition to the signing of the member contract agreement. Additional documentation will be required during this onboarding period such as; proof of citizenship status, Covid-19 vaccinations, a minimum high school diploma or its equivalent and more.

NYCHA Health Corps Member Benefits

  • Living allowance of up to $23,800 (pre-tax) distributed evenly throughout the term
  • Members receive a MetroCard for commuting to and from service (if applicable)
  • Eli Segal AmeriCorps Education Award, valued at $4,546.50 upon successful program completion
  • Nonprofit, City Agency, and AmeriCorps exposure
  • Over 200 hours of Learning and Professional Development
  • Access to the online Cornell University Public Health Essentials Certificate (Valued at $3,600)
  • Loan Forbearance and interest accrued paid on qualified student loans upon successful completion

NYCHA Health Corps Member Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen, U.S. National, or Lawful Permanent Resident of the United States
  • Have successfully obtained a High School diploma or its equivalent prior to the start of the program
  • Must be 18 years or older by the start date of the program
  • Agree to and pass a criminal background check if the offer is accepted by the applicant
  • Ability to serve full time for the entire program term (generally M-F 9 AM - 5 PM)
  • A strong motivation for making a positive difference in NYC and NYCHA communities
  • Willingness to learn new skills and improve upon existing ones
  • Must complete a total of 1,200 hours from October 31, 2022 – June 30, 2023
