Volunteer as a Conversation Partner for Adult English Learners – Make a Real Impact, From Anywhere in the U.S.
Riis Settlement is seeking passionate volunteers to support immigrant adults enrolled in our English (ESOL) classes by serving as conversation partners. This is a unique opportunity to connect one-on-one with students and help them strengthen their English for everyday life—whether it’s for work, education, or social interactions.
As a conversation partner, you’ll provide much-needed practice outside the classroom, helping learners build confidence and fluency. You’ll be matched with a student based on your schedule, and we’ll provide all the tools and materials you need.
Semester begins last week of October– Join us in creating meaningful change!
Volunteer Requirements:
Commit to 8 weeks of volunteering
Be available for 2 hours per week (1 hour per student)
Comfortable using Google Meet or Zoom
Based in the United States
Be at least 18 years old
Speak English fluently
Enthusiastic about encouraging and supporting adult learners
Highly valued (but not required):
Bilingual in Spanish, Mandarin, Russian, Bangla or other languages
Experience in teaching, tutoring, or mentoring
TESOL/TEFL certification
