In January of 2012, I was asked to help build a Football Program on the Lower East Side. After 20 years of coaching the Queens Falcons and winning several Championships, it was time for a new challenge. The most significant accomplishment in those 20 years was not the number of championships we won, it was the creation of, "The Run to Daylight Education Program".
In 1997 Stephen Hoffman and I, started The Run to Daylight Education Program. Together they had the vision of providing the players with the opportunity to attend some of the top boarding schools in the northeast as well as local private schools in the New York City area.
Tragically, Stephen Hoffman was among those lost in the World Trade Center disaster during the events of September 11th, 2001.
Coach Tim is now joined by the first Run to Daylight Education Program candidate Taylor Sele in our mission to help our players attend some of the most prominent prep schools in the country. Taylor had been accepted to the preparatory school Lawrence Academy in Massachusetts in September of 1999. After a successful prep-school career as the state of Massachusetts' third ranked high school prospect and one of the tops in the nation, Taylor was courted by Notre Dame, Maryland, and Kentucky before deciding to attend Boston College. Taylor Graduated from Boston College and later when on to play for the Indianapolis Colts.
Since the start, the Run to Daylight Education Program has helped upwards of 70 young people in fulfilling their dreams of attending these prominent academic institutions. This Year 2012, Anjgelo Koca and Joseph Fervil will be attending Choate Rosemary Hall and Brunswick School respectively. Our Vision now continues through the NYC Lions Youth Football League / Run to Daylight Education Program. We decided to embrace the lower east side as our next mission to help young people through academics and athletics. East River Park is located in area where 63 % of the community lives below the poverty line.
This year we will be visiting Choate Rosemary Hall, Loomis Chaffee, and Lawrenceville to show the possibilities of what can be when they focus on their academics and athletics. I am asking for your support to help us build this great program in a neighborhood where 63% of the people live below the poverty line. At least 25% of our boys leave the field after each practice to a shelter two blocks away. We hope to help these boys find their way to a prep school this year, but it all starts with you.
I am asking for your help to make a difference. I thank you for your time.
