Volunteers for a Healthy NYC
What Is It?
NYC Service and the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) are working with local nonprofits and hospitals to help New Yorkers live longer, healthier lives. This effort supports HealthyNYC: New York City’s Campaign for Healthier, Longer Lives. The campaign focuses on building capacity for nonprofits and hopsitals doing important work in these seven key health areas:
• Heart disease & diabetes
• Screenable cancers
• Drug overdose
• Suicide
• COVID-19
• Homicide
• Maternal Mortality
Why It Matters
-
Recent national and New York city studies show that both adults and youth are experiencing high rates of loneliness and isolation
-
Life expectancy has dropped in the city, and some communities are more affected than others
-
Supporting local organizations and volunteering helps make neighborhoods safer and healthier
