Ruth's Refuge furnishes homes for refugees and asylum seekers as they rebuild their lives in New York City. We seek to welcome refugees and asylum seekers and help them feel secure and safe in their new homes, as well as connected with caring and welcoming people who provide a sense of community as they start their new lives in America. Ruth’s Refuge is the only organization dedicated to furnishing homes for refugees and asylum seekers in New York City. We partner with local resettlement agencies and asylum serving organizations that refer clients to us when they have secured housing. Each client chooses their furnishings and household goods from our client only website with the aid of a personal shopper. A team of volunteers delivers all items to the home and works with the family to assemble beds and other furnishings. Ruth’s Refuge provides all the furnishings through a combination of donated used furniture and new items. Our clients come from all over the world, but what they all have in common is that they want a safe and stable home to make their own after years of displacement and trauma. Physical furnishings and household goods are both a necessity and a source of great emotional comfort for people who have faced the trauma of dislocation. From the first moment of referral to the weeks after the family moves into their new home, Ruth’s Refuge takes care of their household needs through a trauma-informed approach that empowers refugee families and helps them feel welcomed and supported at every step.
